Let’s face it, we’ve all had those days when we think “What did I even do?”. We often get pulled in so many different directions that one simple task, such as unloading the dishwasher, can take an hour.
Here are some tips to help you get things done and feel accomplished –
1. Always Keep a Notebook
First and foremost, always have a notebook. It’s inevitable, you are working on a project and your brain thinks of a really great idea for another project. It’s tempting to stop what you are doing and go work on it, but don’t. Take that notebook and jot down you’re super awesome idea and when it’s time for that project you can just take a look and start going. The notepad is also a great way to imbed things into our brain. Short term memory ideas don’t stay very long, so write it down!
2. Work during Your Peak Energy Hours
The key is to find out when you feel the most energized and the most productive. For some, like myself, I feel most energized in the mornings. I wake up at 5:45AM and by 9AM I’ve already worked out, meditated, updated social media, had breakfast, cleaned the kitchen, packed my lunch, showered and dressed. I know for some people that sounds terrifying waking up that early, but for me it works! Maybe your a night owl and prefer waking up at noon and working till midnight when you have the most creative juice. Once you’ve identified the time, try to do your most important tasks during that span. I promise you will get so much more done!
3. Take you Vitamins
I hate to sound like a mother but please take you vitamins. A venti soy latte will only take you so far before the crash. When you hit that mid day slump grab a B-12 vitamin to boost your energy levels. Or grab delicious gummy vitamins that have B-12 included, win-win.
4. Take a Beak
I know what you are thinking. “I’m too busy to take a ten minute break!”. We all fall victim to thinking that if we leave our computer for a second we’ll be fired. That’s not true. Taking a ten minute break away from your screen is actually a great way to prevent burn out. If ten minutes is just too long, every hour or two get up from your computer and just walk around for a couple while you listen to your favorite record. If not for you, for your eyes. They’ll thank you for it later.
5. Make a Daily To-Do
Last but certainly, not least as this might actually be the most important thing. Every morning, or evening for the night owls, jot down the daily tasks that need to be done before you even start. Of course, during the day some client will call you and say they need their screens RIGHT NOW. You know that they don’t. Write it down on the list and keep working. If you want to get really nerdy, you can prioritize items using A,B and C. A being the most important.
I hope this list gave you some ideas on how to better attack your day.
